Pumpkin "pie" for all

Farm News

Thanksgiving eve and bellies are full. Cheeses are ladled, flipped, washed and tucked in for the night. Goats are milked and even managed to get in a little grazing in between rain showers and cloudy, windy cold. The week was punctuated with changes—the last group of doelings took their long walk “over the river and through the woods” to join their “sisters” on the south farm. Given how wet the field was, we were worried they would hesitate to cross any standing water. Yet, they embraced their freedom and trotted right through the muddy rivulets. I started at the head of the pack, grain bucket shaking for enticement, but soon they overtook me, seeming to know exactly where they were headed. Erica ran to take the lead, and I huffed and puffed my tired body to join them at the Quonset hut. They stampeded through the gates and before long they were reunited with their “old friends,” head butting aside.

The milking does remain on the home farm, milk production declining slowly as expected. The retirees who spent the fall with the doelings returned back to the milking barns, including our senior doe, “Pearl.” She is one of our miracle goats, having undergone serious complications during her pregnancy this year that left her with temporary paralysis. She survived her trauma and has an endearing “side-winder” walk. She has taken up the mantel of “docent goat” for visitors. When the barn door is open, she strolls to see who’s in the farm store or working outside. She enjoys scarfing up fallen leaves in the yard and even stood patiently for the UPS delivery guy as he gave Blue (our dog) and her a treat. She has earned the privileges of a senior goat; we spoil her with treats, including left-over pumpkins.

Here’s the line-up of offerings for this weekend:

  • Pimento cheese dip—so popular, so delicious! -featuring our cottage cheese, organic red peppers from Blue Moon Farm and parmesan like cheese called “Everton Reserve” from our cow-dairy friends at Jacobs & Brichford in Indiana). This is an instant appetizer for your hungry holiday guests—serve warm with crackers.

  • Merry Cow-introducing our latest cow-milk creation---a washed rind cheese made with 100% organic, grass-fed milk. The rind is bathed weekly a saline wash including local beer and ripening cultures. Texture of the past is firm and supple; flavor is slightly yeasty but mild. Great on a cheese board with roasted veggies, tart jam or whole-grain mustard and salami.
