Our goats lead an enviously carefree life on the prairie. Our herd of Nubians and LaMancha’s are raised as sustainable as possible. We integrate rotational grazing practices, locally sourced grains, as well as home-grown alfalfa hay.
In 2010, our herd and our goat cheeses became ANIMAL WELFARE APPROVED-an independent certifying program that emphasizes pasture-based animal husbandry and humane treatment of livestock. It is considered the "gold standard" certification for livestock production. For more information, go to http://www.animalwelfareapproved.org/
In addition to our goats we also have a couple dozen laying hens; they wander the farm and scratch at the compost. They also adore hanging around in the goat barn with the does! Also in the barn is our “guard donkey” Jemimah (Jemmie). She came to us last year, and we think she is charming. She takes her job as gardian very seriously! In January 2013, we added another member of the animal kingdom to our farm, "Blue" - a blue heeler/Australian cattle dog!
Our dairy is an Illinois licensed Grade A Dairy (License number 003508), which means that we must comply with state regulations for maintaining hygienic conditions during milking and milk storage. Our farmstead cheese making facility is an Illinois licensed Manufactured Processing Facility (License number 17-532); as such we maintain extremely hygienic conditions in the rooms where the milk is pasteurized and the cheese are made and aged. Our facilities are inspected monthly by the IL Department of Public Health.
